The mayor of Ottawa has declared a state of emergency amid ongoing protests associated with the Freedom Convoy, which first arrived in the nation’s capital over a week ago.
In a statement, Mayor Jim Watson says that declaring a state of emergency reflects the “serious danger and threat to safety and security of residents” being posed by the demonstrations.
Further, they say it highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government. As well, it gives the city more flexibility in ensuring the continuity of essential services.
The convoy first arrived in Ottawa on January 29th and protests have been continuing since.
A GoFundMe for the convoy raised millions of dollars in support of those participating. However, the fundraiser was recently shut down by the fundraising platform after it was informed that the once peaceful protest had become an occupation with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.
Today, February 6, Mayor Jim Watson has declared a state of emergency for the City of Ottawa due to the ongoing demonstrations.
