The CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is reassuring residents of a reliable supply of power despite the harsh winter and Muskrat Falls delays.
In its most recent update to the PUB, Hydro confirmed it will extend the life of the Holyrood plant by another year, to 2024. That’s to keep pace with the delays around expected final commissioning of the Muskrat Falls Project, now pushed to the end of May.
Hydro has said it wants to keep a two-year overlap with Holyrood just in case there are issues with GE’s troubled software for the Labrador-Island Link.
In an interview with VOCM News, Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams was asked if she has confidence in the system.
She said she has confidence in the work that’s being done to ensure the right decisions are being made on the ground, noting while she’s not a structural engineer with expertise in ice-loading, the right people armed with the right information, in conjunction with the PUB, will decide how best to proceed.
Meanwhile, Williams says she doesn’t expect any impact on electricity rates until well into the summer, adding she expects the rate mitigation deal to be signed any day now.
