A local seabird biologist says there is no evidence to suggest that the Avian Flu, which was detected among domesticated birds on two separate sites on the northeast Avalon in recent months, has made its way to the local seabird population.
Turre hunting season has begun, leaving some hunters wondering if the birds are safe to harvest or consume.
Dr. Bill Montevecchi told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that it’s generally believed that the bird flu came in with European strays, but the local seabird population does not appear to be affected.
He says the Canadian Wildlife Service is taking samples from dead birds that wash up on beaches, and so far there is no indication that seabirds are adversely affected.
