Opposition House Leader Barry Petten is calling for the legislature to reopen for emergency debate on Bay du Nord.
The call comes following reports of a rift within the federal Liberal caucus over support for the massive offshore oil project.
It’s a tough sell for some MPs who feel the country needs to move away from fossil fuel development and commit to greater efforts to achieve net-zero emissions targets.
The project represents a significant and much-needed economic boost for the province, which has been hard hit by the downturn in the oil and gas industry.
Petten says the people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve “a full understanding of the future of the Bay du Nord project and its impact on the economy.”
He says all MHAs must stand united and call on Ottawa to support the project and the many people who rely on the industry.
Petten has written a letter to the Speaker appealing for the House to reopen as soon as possible on the issue.
