Government officials have confirmed three positive rabies cases in foxes near Nain and are awaiting confirmation on four additional suspected cases on the north coast of Labrador – three in Nain and one in Hopedale.
Two of the three positive cases in Nain were in Arctic foxes.
Fisheries and Forestry officials have been receiving reports of an increased number of foxes behaving unusually in Labrador this winter.
They are asking residents to be vigilant and take precautions when encountering animals that are acting in an unusual or aggressive manner.
That includes staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking and making unusual noises.
Residents are asked to keep their pets tethered or penned while outdoors and under supervision, while dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies if possible.
Officials are also asking area residents to report all sightings of Arctic foxes, and any animal acting strangely.
Residents who have been bitten or scratched by a fox or dog are asked to seek immediate medical treatment. Rabies is always fatal if not treated soon after exposure. Wash any bites, scratches or areas of contact immediately with soap and water and contact a local community clinic to get assessed.
