A Brigus man has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for sexually assaulting an elderly man at the Bay Roberts Retirement Centre in August 2020.
44-year-old Christopher Power, who was a personal care attendant at the facility, was also found guilty of forging papers to pass himself off as an LPN.
The Crown had been seeking 18 months while the defence had sought a six-month sentence.
Power was found guilty last October, and had earlier pleaded guilty to forging and presenting false documents.
It was in August of 2020 when a staff member walked in on him as he was fondling the genitals of a sleeping elderly male resident.
In sentencing Power this morning, Judge Jacqueline Brazil took into consideration that Power had a previous conviction for sexual assault dating back to 1997. It’s not clear whether the retirement centre was aware of that when he was hired.
Brazil also placed Power on two years’ probation and made the mandatory order for his DNA for the national police database.
