A man from Natuashish will be sentenced today for second-degree murder in the shooting death of another man in that community.
35-year-old Etienne Jacobish was originally charged with first-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.
The incident occurred on January 3 of last year, on a Sunday afternoon, when Jacobish fired at the victim from his front porch with a 12-guage shotgun. A short time later police were flagged down after the victim’s body was found on the road in front of the shooter’s house.
Both the Crown and defence have agreed that Jacobish should spend at least 12 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole. But it will be up to Justice Stacy Ryan to decide whether to accept that joint submission or impose a term of her own.
Sentencing is set for this afternoon in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Supreme Court.
