A Newfoundland Senator in Ottawa is responding to some controversial comments made by one of his colleagues regarding the convoy protests.
The protestors in the nation’s capital have been cleared out after a hectic weekend in the city that involved police using riot gear, along with the arrests of many demonstrators.
Video recently surfaced of Conservative Senator Michael McDonald commenting on the response of people in Ottawa to the protests.
In it, McDonald says he’s “sick” of the “entitlement” across the country of people with “six figure salaries and 20 hour work weeks.”
In comments made to CTV news, McDonald says he is “mortified” at the video, noting that he had been drinking the night it was recorded.
He says he will issue an apology in the Senate today.
David Wells, a Conservative Senator from this province, is critical of government’s response, and says he never felt uncomfortable walking through the protests – noting that most were friendly and courteous.
He does, however, take a stance against the comments made by McDonald, calling them “disappointing.”
“Senator McDonald should have known better,” says Wells.
He doesn’t subscribe to those views “in any way,” noting that the people of Ottawa went through a hard time when the horns were blaring.
