St. John’s city council is expected to table its final report on the 2021 municipal election later today.
The report is described as a post-mortem on the election process, looking at the successes of it as well as areas that may need improvement.
The report says over 69,000 people were on the voting list as of election day, and there was a voter turnout of 47 per cent.
About 6 per cent of the 33,000 votes received were processed at the eleven satellite drop-off centres throughout the city. The report says the numbers justify the continuation of the centres, though some adjustments may be in line.
They say 1.4 per cent of votes received were rejected, mostly due to voter declaration forms not being returned with the kits or due to them not being signed.
As of January 26, 2022 an estimated 4,500 voting kits were returned to Canada Post as being undeliverable.
In total, the election cost over $354,000, which is on par with previous years.
The report offers several recommendations for improvements.
Recruitment of staff was an issue in the election, so improvements in compensation are warranted.
