The Canadian Coast Guard says it appears as though the oil that spilled from the MV Alaskaborg, which ran into trouble off Cape Race earlier this month, has dissipated.
The Coast Guard says no pollution was noticed over the weekend through aerial surveillance and observations made by the crew of the Coast Guard ship Ann Harvey. That indicates, according to the Coast Guard, that the approximately 30,000 litres of oil which spilled from the Alaskaborg’s damaged fuel tank has dispersed and evaporated.
Coastline assessments on the southern Avalon showed no pollution however, a number of oiled birds have been reported. Bird biologist Dr. Bill Montevecchi is reporting a total of 17 oiled birds since the Alaskaborg incident, however the Coast Guard says seven oiled birds have been officially confirmed by government agencies.
Both Montevecchi and the Coast Guard are encouraging hunters and others to report any sheening, oil birds or animals by calling the Spill Reporting Line at 1-800-563-9089.
In the meantime, the Alaskaborg departed St. John’s for Rotterdam on Saturday.
