The Emergencies Act passed in the House of Commons Monday night after several days of fractious debate.
The controversial measures passed by a vote of 185 to 151 and was split largely along party lines. The NDP backed the Liberals while the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois voted against.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has indicated that the measures, which are in effect until mid-March, will not be in place not one “single day longer” than necessary.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh warns however that his party will pull their support and trigger a vote if they believe the Emergencies Act is no longer necessary.
