Some patients in Newfoundland and Labrador are waiting for upwards of two years to see a psychologist. That’s according to Kimberly Yetman, the CEO of the NL branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Last week, the Association of Psychology Newfoundland and Labrador called the current situation a “psychology crisis,” noting that many areas are experiencing vacancies of between 30 to 50 per cent.
That’s extremely concerning, says Yetman, because the people who need such services often need them immediately.
In terms of what impact that could have on health outcomes, she says they’re seeing the situation reflected in the Health Accord, and she’s hoping the province will spend more to improve the situation.
She’s afraid of what the impact could be on people’s mental health in the coming years, especially in light of the pandemic.
