A long-time seal harvester says it’s shocking that the views of the few continue to hold back an industry with so much promise.
Trevor Jones, a 49-year-old enterprise owner/operator from La Scie, joined the FFAW for a news conference on the issue yesterday.
It was called to launch a new multi-media blitz to remind governments and the public of the injustice inflicted on sealers and fishers.
The new campaign includes a 10-minute video which demonstrates how seal populations continue to grow while fish disappear.
Trevor Jones says opportunities to produce seal meat and other products are being wasted.
He says the fact that people are starving around the world while there’s an over-population of seals that could be processed, is unacceptable.
The FFAW says while the facts around seals are undeniable, politicians continue to lack the courage to sign off on big reductions in their numbers.
They say what’s required is pressure from the province for a renewed commitment from Ottawa on reducing seals to protect the fishery.
