Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador says the move toward a regional approach to municipal government is expected to take several years.
Local Service Districts and residents of unincorporated areas have been asking questions about the process and their role in ongoing discussions.
President of MNL, and Grand Falls-Windsor town councillor, Amy Coady says both LSDs and UICs will have a say in the process which will be led by the Department of Municipal Affairs.
Residents of LSDs and UICs are upset about the prospect of paying taxes for services they are already receiving and paying for. Others, who own properties in unincorporated areas are concerned about having to pay two sets of taxes.
Coady says they hear and understand those concerns, which is why the discussion needs to be had about how taxes within regions would be applied and whether they will be based on the services received.
