Schools on property owned by the Archdiocese in St. John’s could eventually be part of the selloff to pay out sex abuse claims from the former Mount Cashel Orphanage.
Until now, bankruptcy proceedings have been laser-focused on churches, parish halls, priest residences and all the land they sit on.
But today for the first time there was specific reference to all of the schools that also occupy church land.
None of the schools are included in the current listing of properties up for sale—which does include the entire Basilica complex in St. John’s.
But it was made clear today that they could eventually, with reference to input from lawyers for the school district and education minister.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court approved the sale of two more church properties today—rectories at 38 The Boulevard in St. John’s and 20 Boland Street in the Goulds.
It was noted that efforts are also underway to find new homes for the priests displaced by the ongoing sale of properties.
How much they sold for and other details have been sealed by the court, given commercial sensitivities.
The court also approved a 45-day extension—to April 20—for the entire bankruptcy process.
Lawyers say without it, a fire sale would ensue, fetching less than the properties are currently worth.
Meanwhile, in a statement to VOCM News, a spokesperson for the Department of Education says it would be inappropriate to comment while the matter is before the Supreme Court.
However, officials did confirm that the department is aware of the court filings and has been in communication with all parties on the matter, adding they will continue to monitor the proceedings as they progress.
