A resident of the province originally from Ukraine is anxiously watching the events of the war unfolding in her home country.
Nadya Butt-Velychko of Harbour Grace has many family members, including her mother, living in the country.
Her mother was able to leave and is currently in Poland, while her sister is safe near the Polish border.
She calls the scenes coming out of Ukraine “heartbreaking.”
She was there with her children visiting her family just a couple of years ago, planning to return after the pandemic.
Now, she’s not sure if there will be anything to return to.
Butt-Velychko says the support she has received from her neighbours has been amazing.
She began collecting donations for the people of Ukraine, and the community around her rallied with donations of clothes, food and medical supplies – filling nearly every room of her home.
