Canada’s very first Inuk cardiac surgeon is practicing at the Health Sciences in St. John’s.
Dr. Donna Kimmaliardjuk, who completed medical school at the University of Calgary and who trained at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute add Cleveland Clinic, joined Eastern Health’s cardiology team in 2021.
Kimmaliardjuk says she came to Newfoundland and Labrador knowing the need for cardiac surgeons and the province’s high incidence of heart disease.
She says for a young heart surgeon who is just starting out Newfoundland and Labrador provided an excellent opportunity.
