A 33-year-old St. John’s man who had been wanted by the RNC was arrested by RCMP following a lengthy police operation in Grand Falls-Windsor on Monday.
RCMP attempted a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway in central Newfoundland around 4:30 Monday morning. The vehicle sped off instead of pulling over, exiting the highway onto Union Street in Grand Falls-Windsor. Police later received numerous tips that the driver involved was Dwight Thorne, who was wanted by the RNC in St. John’s.
The RNC had issued a warrant for Thorne’s arrest back in January related to an incident that occurred on December 28th.
Thorne, who was believed to be in possession of a firearm, was located inside a home on Whitmore Street around mid-day Monday but refused to come out.
A safety perimeter was set up around the house in the early afternoon, and officers with the RCMP’s critical incident response team, including a crisis negotiator and other specialized units, were on scene. Municipal enforcement officers with the town of Grand Falls-Windsor and members of the Exploits Ground Search and Rescue helped with setting up the perimeter.
Thorne was taken into custody without further incident around 8:30 Monday evening.
He’s facing a list of charges including flight from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle and four counts of breaching conditions of his previous release from jail.
