The Public Utilities Board is not happy with the premature release of fuel price increases last week.
Suppliers are given weekly numbers a day before the changes come into effect on Thursdays.
Media are also given an embargoed news release with numbers that can’t be reported before midnight on Wednesdays.
But the PUB says the spread of that information last week on mainstream and social media before midnight was prohibited by legislation.
They say it’s clear there were violations of the legislation and embargo, as word of a near 15-cent increase in gas prices spread like wildfire.
Officials say that led to sudden supply issues for some retailers, not to mention traffic congestion.
As a result, the PUB says they’re changing the times they release the weekly numbers.
The embargoed media release will now be issued at 8 p.m. on the day before adjustment, while retailers will get the numbers at about 2 p.m. the day before prices change.
The PUB says they’re still reviewing last week’s events and may make further changes to the way they release fuel price information.
