Even as Bell Islanders are hopeful that a beloved family physician is returning to the community, they are mourning the recent loss of another well-known and dedicated doctor.
Dr. Walter Tucker, who served the people of Bell Island for decades, passed away on Sunday at the age of 80. Tucker helped to deliver countless babies during his time on Bell Island, or as his obituary says, he “charmed infants into the world.”
Tucker was born in Harbour Grace, beginning his medical career as a pharmacist before pursuing a medical degree in Ireland. Tucker and his wife Marian moved back to Newfoundland in the 1970s, setting up practice in Wabana. Bell Islander Ken Kavanaugh says Dr. Tucker’s service in the community didn’t end at medicine.
He’s being remembered for his dedication and range of practice, performing everything from deliveries to regular house calls. Tucker is resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home in St. John’s, with a funeral Mass scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th from Mary Queen of Peace Church.
