Several serious car crashes on the TCH near Whitbourne are causing the local fire chief to question access to emergency care in the area.
One person was sent to hospital last night following a single-vehicle collision 10 km east of Whitbourne on the TCH.
Fire Chief Jamie Budden says the jaws of life had to be used to get the person out of the vehicle.
Budden says this is the third serious collision they have had on the highway in the last two weeks.
According to Budden, there is no emergency department after hours in Whitbourne, and he wonders if the provincial government is taking the situation seriously enough.
That emergency department services 19 communities and a long stretch of highway. He says the ability to give someone the best care in the shortest time has been taken away.
Budden says despite “daily” calls from the mayor to all levels of government nothing has been done, and is calling for action on what he calls an “emergency situation.”
