That was one wild weekend on the weather front with record-high temperatures, rain, snow and relentless hurricane-force winds.
Things have calmed down somewhat but it’s still going to be a breezy couple of days in many areas including metro.
Douglas Mercer, meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the storm was the product of a large and intense low pressure system which moved up from the US Eastern Seaboard.
He says there were seven recordings of places where wind speed reached Category One hurricane force, the strongest of which was 139 km/h on the south coast.
Highest Winds:
- Sagona Island: 139 km/h
- St. Anthony: 126 km/h
- Pools Island: 126 km/h
- Cape Race: 117 km/h
- Grates Cove: 116 km/h
- St. John’s International Airport: 105 km/h
- St. Lawrence: 104 km/h
- Twillingate: 103 km/h
