A new communications tower has been approved for the Kilbride/Goulds area of St. John’s.
The 115-foot tower will go up at 156 Old Bay Bulls Road, and will include a small supply building, and a 10-foot-high chain-link fence around the site.
It’s located in an Agricultural zone, but was recently given the green light by the provincial government.
Council sent notices to area residents along Old Bay Bulls Road, Walsh’s Lane and Doyle’s Lane, and received three responses—one in favour and two against.
Concerns ranged from how the tower will look in the rural area, to the mental and physical impacts of Electric and Magnetic Field exposure, otherwise known as EMF.
The city noted that Health Canada has specific safety codes in place to limit exposure and ensure public safety.
