Newfoundland and Labrador has set up a Ukrainian desk in Warsaw to help assist refugees, but it is still unknown just how many newcomers will be coming here.
According to government, there are about 3-million refugees in Poland right now fleeing war-torn Ukraine. Four provincial government employees are currently in Poland conducting outreach.
Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne says there could be a “significant” number of refugees coming to Canada once the special visa program is up and running.
However, he stresses that there will be many choices for those people as numerous countries, such as Germany, Italy, and the UK are accepting Ukrainians. Therefore, he says the federal government doesn’t know how many could be headed to Canada.
He says one of the things the desk will do is match Ukrainians with local employers. “That’s how you create a successful resettlement,” says Byrne.
