PAL Airlines pilots held a silent demonstration at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s this morning over contract negotiations.
While the hallway inside the hotel was silent, the message was loud clear.
About 25 pilots lined the hall near the main entrance, staying still and holding signs with messages such as “NO TAKEOFF WITHOUT THE PILOTS” and “PAL: PEOPLE AGAINST LABOUR.”
Negotiations for a new deal have been going on for two years, but as of yet, the union has not been able to secure what they call an “industry standard” contract.
The union recently voted 100 per cent in favour of strike action should they not reach a deal.
However, spokesperson and PAL Captain Wanda Clarke says that today’s demonstration is not a strike, noting that a strike would be a last resort.
When asked about the general feeling among employees at the moment, Clarke says everyone is hopeful for a positive outcome.
In the meantime, PAL Airlines says it looks forward to resuming negotiations with the pilot group this afternoon.
