The NDP and the Liberals have reached a historic agreement, one which will see the current federal Parliament continue functioning until 2025.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the arrangement at a news conference carried live on VOCM this morning.
This kind of agreement, which is a version of the deal the B.C. NDP struck with the Greens in that province in 2017, generally involves an opposition party agreeing to support the government on confidence motions and budget or appropriation votes for a certain period of time.
Trudeau says it is about focusing on what each party agrees on, rather than disagrees on, and adds that will include action on areas such as dental care, pharmacare, climate change, 10 days of paid sick leave and improved access to housing.
They will bring in measures to make it easier for Canadians to own their own home as well as a “Bill of Rights” to protect first-time homebuyers.
Trudeau says this will enable his government to work for effectively for Canadians.
He promises to create a fairer tax system for the middle class by addressing profits made by financial institutions during the pandemic.
