Joint funding to help with Memorial University’s greenhouse gas emissions was announced today.
Just over $10.5 million from the provincial and federal government is going to Memorial University to replace an oil-fired hot water boiler used to help heat the campus.
The boiler will be replaced by two new electric-powered boilers, which will help MUN reduce emissions by 30,000 tonnes a year, the equivalent of emissions from about 6,000 vehicles.
The funding comes from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Climate Change Challenge Fund on the provincial side, with the feds putting up $5.2 million.
Federal Minister Seamus O’Regan says when it comes to reducing emissions, every little bit counts, noting the federal emissions reduction plan will be unveiled in the coming days.
