Independent MHA Perry Trimper is inviting his colleagues in the provincial legislature to support a private member’s motion he made last fall to debate the fiscal and climate crisis facing Newfoundland and Labrador and whether or not Bay du Nord is the answer.
The Independent member says it’s time to put all the facts out there and examine them.
Trimper, who worked in the environmental industry for decades, says while Bay du Nord represents a great deal in terms of revenue for Newfoundland and Labrador, that is offset by climate target penalties.
Bay du Nord is expected to generate $3 to $3.5 billion dollars in revenue for Newfoundland and Labrador, but Trimper cautions, contrast that with the $24 billion in pollution penalties resulting from the carbon dioxide created during the extraction process.
He says Newfoundland and Labrador will need federal financial support toward a just transition.
He told VOCM Open Line that the province really doesn’t have many options other than to “proceed down this path.”
He suggests it’s time to “get at this,” and Ottawa has to give Newfoundland and Labrador the financial recognition it needs.
