A 29-year-old man is facing charges of dangerous driving and flight from police following an incident on the Trans Canada near Bishop’s Falls on Tuesday, March 29.
Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP noticed a car aggressively pulling onto the highway from the Botwood Highway around 1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The officer flicked on the siren and lights, and the vehicle pulled over onto the side of the road, but just as police pulled in behind him, the vehicle sped off again.
Police decided not to chase the vehicle in the interest of public safety, but instead watched the vehicle from a safe distance.
They say the vehicle continued to drive aggressively, tailgating other drivers and narrowly missed a head-on collision with a transport truck, forcing another driver onto the shoulder to avoid a crash.
RCMP lost sight of the vehicle, but it was located a short time later and pulled over onto the side of the road where the driver ran off on foot. Police Service Dog Kane was about to start a search when the accused returned to the vehicle and surrendered to police.
Robert Gunn is facing charges of flight from police, dangerous driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, driving while suspended and having cannabis readily available inside a vehicle.
He’s been released to appear in court April 27.
