The province’s Fisheries Minister says he was taken by surprise by DFO’s decision to close the mackerel fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Bragg will be reaching out to harvesters on the south and west coasts to see what impact it will have and what options are available for bait.
He says there was lots of squid last fall, but he’s not sure how much is in storage and whether it’s any good for the lobster fishery.
