The Tobin family of Newfoundland will be marking the fourth anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy quietly among themselves again this year.
On April 6, 2018 a tractor trailer struck the bus carrying members of the Saskatchewan team, killing 16 people and injuring 13 others.
Among the dead was goalie Parker Tobin, who had deep roots in Conception Bay North and Trinity Bay.
His dad Ed, who grew up in Bay Roberts, says the family has been overwhelmed with the support they’ve received since the tragedy.
He says the money they’ve received from supporters and well-wishers has been channeled into a Parker Tobin Memorial Fund and is used to help young goalies and other hockey players with the cost of equipment and getting involved in the game.
He says Parker was well aware of the costs of playing the game and that inspired them to set up the fund. Tobin says meeting the players and their families, who have always been very grateful, has been a big part of their healing process.
This year’s recipient is Ethan McKay of St. George’s.
