Public Health has been in contact with the province’s regional health authorities to put a plan in place to offer a fourth dose of the COVID vaccine to some of the province’s more vulnerable citizens.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (or NACI) is recommending a fourth dose of the COVID vaccine to people over the age of 80 and those in long-term care facilities.
NACI also made the discretionary recommendation that a second booster be offered to people in their 70s and those living in Indigenous communities.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, they’re working on a plan to offer fourth doses to vulnerable groups.
She says NACI is making the recommendation given the current epidemiology and the fact that vaccine protection wanes over time, and plans are underway to meet those recommendations.
Meanwhile, the province is awaiting possible recommendations on a booster shot for those aged 12 to 18.
