The Sierra Club Canada Foundation says by approving the Bay du Nord oil project, the federal government showed it will not act to protect our environment and our federal government has abandoned our responsibility to be climate leaders.
There is no such thing as green oil, says the organization, and no further expanded production of fossil fuels is green. They say this project is not necessary for the economy of NL or global energy security.
They call upon all leaders to oppose this government’s climate inaction and say we can have no confidence in their climate promises. They say failing to oppose the expansion of oil and gas extraction would be complicity in climate denial.
Curtis: Nothing More Than Green-Washing
Conor Curtis, Digital Communications Coordinator with the Sierra Club Canada Foundation, says the approval of the project is “extremely unfortunate,” adding that this government has chosen to ignore climate science by approving the project.
He says the project leads to the development of fossil fuel reserves that prevent us from meeting global climate targets. He says research conducted last year shows that even with existing oil and gas projects in action, we will be unable to meet emission reduction targets, even without the Bay du Nord project.
Curtis says from an economic standpoint, the concern revolves around putting such a dependency back on oil at a time when the world “is hopefully going to be rapidly shifting away from that resource.
He says it is nothing more than “green-washing” to call the project environmentally sound or necessary in any way.
