Hibernia Management and Development Company has been fined $28,000 in connection with a spill from the Hibernia Platform in August of 2019.
The original notice of violation, issued in August of 2021, was for the amount of $40,000, but HMDC filed a Request for Review. The Review Committee determined that the penalty be reduced to $28,000.
Approximately 2,200 litres of oil spilled into the ocean after a power outage caused the deluge system on the platform to activate, causing drains to overflow.
Meanwhile an inquiry into a July 18, 2019 spill, which resulted in the release of 12,000 litres of oil into the ocean, is ongoing.
