An iconic voice of hockey across Canada has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
Bob Cole, a Newfoundlander whose voice is plastered over many of the most memorable hockey moments over the years, was honoured with the award yesterday by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
Cole’s broadcasting career started right here on VOCM in 1954. In 1969 he began doing radio play-by-play for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, moving over to the TV broadcast in 1973.
Cole has earned numerous accolades during his decades-long career, including an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.
Fittingly, his final broadcast was a matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in 2019.
For many people, he was, and still is, the voice of Canada 🇨🇦 Bob Cole accepts his lifetime achievement award, thank you Bob!#CdnScreenAwards pic.twitter.com/zUD8NlGqfW
