The provincial government has clarified the situation regarding the Buss Pass Program following comments on social media by a couple of city councillors.
The program, created a couple of years ago, allows people on income support to ride Metrobus for free. It is being expanded to include some seniors and a select category of young people.
Councillor Maggie Burton agrees with the expansion of the program, but is critical of government on several fronts, including leaving Metrobus out of the diesel tax rebate and the measure which provides a 50 per cent cut in vehicle registration fees.
The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development says they are committed to working with the City of St. John’s and Metrobus to get the program out for all income support recipients, seniors who received the Guaranteed Income Supplement and youth receiving services from the Youth Services Program.
