Premier Andrew Furey admits a graphic used by the provincial government to outline cost savings to low income families “missed the mark.”
The graphic outlines the “extra money” “in the wallets of a low income household of $16,000 with three children, who rely on public transit and who rent their home.
It suggests that that low income household will have $13,270 extra money in their wallets based on cost of living measures outlined in the budget.
That suggestion has prompted great negative reaction, with opinion on the graphic ranging from completely unrealistic to insulting.
Opposition Leader David Brazil questioned Premier Andrew Furey on the graphic in the House of Assembly.
Brazil asked the Premier to apologize for a “baffling” graphic and accused government of being “out of touch” in terms of addressing the rising cost of living. Premier Furey admitted that the graphic missed the mark, but he won’t apologize for what the budget represents in addressing the cost of living.
