Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of patients undergoing treatment at the Janeway Children’s Hospital, will be able to put shovels in the ground this summer for the development of a new Family Time Park thanks to the support of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
A $750,000 capital campaign was launched to develop the new park and the final goal was even closer in reach with funds raised through the VOCM Cares Ronald McDonald House Radiothon on VOCM right across Newfoundland and Labrador Wednesday afternoon.
Director of Development and Communications Christina Morgan made the announcement live on the air.
Wednesday’s VOCM Cares Radiothon raised just over $295,000. Morgan says that puts them at 76 per cent of their overall goal, with further fundraising efforts underway. Donations can continue to be made on the RMHC NL website.
Major donations came in from various supporters:
- McDonalds matched up to $10,000
- NL Hydro – $75,000 donation
- Former Premier Brian Tobin announced three donations totaling $150,000:
- $50,000 on behalf of the Brian and Jodean Tobin Family Foundation-
- $50,000 on behalf of BMO-
- $50,000 on behalf of New Flyer Industries
- Premier Andrew Furey also joined live on air to announce $20,000 from the Provincial Government
An outdoor park and recreation space was identified as very important by 95 per cent of the families asked who had previously stayed at Ronald McDonald house.
The new space, which is hoped to be available to families by September will include fencing, a barbecue and patio area, accessible playground and play area, gathering space and vegetable garden.
