It’s the end of an era for one St. John’s neighbourhood. Walsh’s Store has closed its doors for good after serving the Mundy Pond and St. Clare Avenue areas for more than 70 years.
The corner shop at the intersection of Campbell and St. Clare avenues was a staple go-to for the neighbourhood.
Freddie Walsh, the second generation operator of the store, often allowed customers to run tabs and offered help and guidance.
Area residents remember Freddie as “a lovely lady and always good for a laugh.” She was willing to run a tab for people who needed a two litre of milk, or bread until cheque day. One man remembers her having “a book under her cash register with about a hundred names.”
A Facebook page dedicated to memories of Walsh’s Store has been created with people sharing stories and pictures dating back years.
