A portion of Water Street in Carbonear was closed to traffic Thursday evening while firefighters battled a fire in the town’s historic commercial core.
The fire broke out in the building next to Cold Water Cafe, which used to be home to the old Main Street Restaurant.
Thick, acrid smoke filled the downtown area and was visible throughout the town.
There’s no immediate word on whether there were any injuries.
Fire investigators will begin their probe into the cause of the fire once it’s knocked down.
