A polar bear spotted wandering in and around Grates Cove on the tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula was safely captured yesterday by conservation officers and moved to a more remote location. Area residents say the bear appears to have come ashore in the area of nearby Red Head Cove.
This has been a busy year for polar bear sightings all along the northeast coast from Black Tickle in Labrador to St. Anthony, Goose Cove, Fogo, Greenspond and the Avalon Peninsula.
People are reminded to give polar bears a lot of space, never to crowd the animals and to stay upwind. If you see a polar bear or signs of an animal in your area, contact the RCMP or your closest wildlife office.
