The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department had a long Thursday night, after responding to a fire on Water Street in the town’s historic commercial core.
The fire broke out around 7 p.m. in the building next to Cold Water Cafe, that used to be home to the old Main Street Restaurant.
When they arrived on the scene smoke was already escaping under the eaves of the building, and flames were visible inside.
Thick smoke was visible throughout the town.
The first team entered the building and scaled to the upper floor, where the flames were immediately viable.
Firefighters battled the blaze, but it continued to escalate.
Other crews searched the accessible apartments in the building, and determined nobody was inside.
The blaze continued to rage, forcing the firefighters outside to battle it from the exterior.
The Victoria and Salmon Cove Fire Departments also responded to the call, helping get the fire under control, and stopping the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings.
The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department is thanking the community members for supplying coffee, food and support during the long night.
