Local residents are concerned about an oil leak in Shoal Point on the Port au Port Peninsula.
Photos from the area show an old pipe coming out of the ground at an old oil drilling site leaking oil into the water.
Resident Bill Gorman says the leak was noticed recently by a couple walking in the area.
Several dead birds were also found in the area, but Gorman says he was told no oil was visible on them. He says no cause of death has been determined, therefore he doesn’t know if it is connected to the oil spill.
Gorman says that the pipe had been leaking years ago, and the government at the time brought in a contractor to seal it up.
He says that work appears to have broken off and the pipe is spilling what he calls a “large” amount of oil into the water, which is just as much or even more than what was being spilled before.
Gorman questions how the pipe could have broken off again as there has been very little ice in the bay in recent years, and no ice at all this year. He wants to know who will be held accountable and fix the issue.
