The city of St. John’s says the stairs at the bottom of Carter’s Hill, and the adjoining retaining wall on Livingstone Street, are on a list of structures scheduled for rehabilitation this year.
The city was responding to concerns raised about the concrete stairs which are in a serious state of disrepair.
The metal handrail has completely detached from the broken and crumbling concrete and is hanging in places well above the ground below.
The city says the damage occurred during the winter season and temporary repairs were completed by Public Works.
When VOCM News visited the site earlier this week, a broken barricade was lying on the grass below the stairs.
The city is asking people to respect the barricades in place and to avoid using the stairs until repairs are made and the barricades are removed.
