The PC Opposition called an impromptu media briefing Wednesday morning to slam government for continued delays in opening two, new long-term care homes in central Newfoundland.
The Tories say the recent ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of the two facilities was a classic case of smoke and mirrors.
With much fanfare, the premier and health minister were on site for the event, saying at the time that the new homes would be open soon.
But that was one month ago, leading PC critic Barry Petten to wonder what that event was really all about.
He acknowledges delays in projects of such magnitude are commonplace, but that doesn’t excuse what he terms the flagrant politics at play.
Issues with the buildings to date have been well-documented, with almost 4,000 deficiencies initially identified, including serious safety, accessibility and ventilation issues.
Despite that and associated delays, the province said clinical staff orientation is ongoing, with plans to start moving patients in this month.
However, with only a few days left in April, Petten doubts they’ll meet that target either.
Central Health Timeline
Meanwhile, in response to VOCM News, Central Health says it’ll be at least another two to three weeks before patients are admitted.
They say there are still some unresolved deficiencies with the water system and flooring in the showers.
