Peer support services are now available in Grand Falls-Windsor for those who are facing substance or behavioural addiction.
Cocaine Anonymous, which has been around for 40 years, is a 12-step program to help people recover from addiction.
Addictions Councillor Mark Gray, who has fought his own battles with addiction, says that support groups were his “ticket to continuous sobriety” after treatment.
He calls the transition from treatment to sober life the missing piece of the puzzle for many across the province.
Gray says once an addict leaves treatment, they’re thrown back into their old lives and expected to stay sober, but that never really works. Rehab works because of all the supports given during the program. He says the transition is overwhelming.
Through his connections, he became involved with Shift Recovery Inc. and CA to offer local support meetings, the first of which recently took place.
Gray says the goal is to create a “solid recovery community.”
With the introduction of Cocaine Anonymous to Grand Falls-Windsor, CA is now available in all Atlantic provinces.
