The local Royal Astronomical Society is raising awareness of some of the negative effects of light pollution.
This province is home to a Dark Sky Preserve, located in Terra Nova National Park, areas that work to reduce or eliminate light pollution in all its forms.
Society President Mike Morrow says they advocated for that preserve, not only for the stargazing benefits but to raise awareness of the implications of inappropriate lighting.
He says too much light or the wrong colour light can have negative health effects on both humans and animals, it can affect bird migration, and it can negatively affect security.
