A lengthy standing ovation in the House of Assembly Monday for a WWII veteran from St. John’s.
Bill Saunders enlisted in the British Royal Navy in 1940 at the age of 19, serving until 1946, helping to liberate POWs.
The NDP member for St. John’s Centre, Jim Dinn, told the House of Assembly that Saunders was instrumental in helping to build the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 1 on Blackmarsh Road.
“He helped build the Legion, and nailed the nails,” says Dinn. Saunders served as the branch’s Sergeant at Arms for 51 years and was still a trustee at the branch as recently as two years ago at age 98.
