The provincial government has partnered with the city of St. John’s to extend and expand the Bus Pass Program.
John Abbott, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development says the $2.1-million expansion of the program will now include seniors over the age of 65 who are receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and youth receiving services from the Youth Services Program.
He says the initiative will enhance the overall quality of life and overall well-being of people with low income. He estimates an additional 8,000 residents will avail of the program.
Abbott says it’s important in that it provides access to services in the community. He says those who cannot avail of services due to transportation costs become isolated gradually. He says further, it will aid those eligible in dealing with the rising cost of living.
Metrobus anticipates that these free bus passes will be issued no later than June 1.
Those who are newly eligible will be mailed instructions on how to obtain their free bus pass.
Seniors receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement can call the Metrobus customer service line at (709)722-9400 for further details.
