The Crown is seeking house arrest for a woman who stole money from the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association.
48-year-old Melissa Williams was hired as treasurer in 2017 to handle the association’s money.
But within a year, she was spending some of it on herself—including hotel and other expenses while on vacation in Toronto.
In the agreed statement of facts read into the record Friday, Williams admitted using the group’s VISA and debit cards to charge personal expenses and withdraw cash, as well as keeping registration e-transfers from parents in her own account.
The affair financially crippled the association, which has since emerged debt-free due to fundraising, new leadership and help from the city.
Williams originally faced six charges linked to more than $75,000 of missing money. But in the end she pleaded guilty to two charges involving just over $12,000—a third of which she’s so far paid back.
The Crown is seeking up to a year of house arrest plus a year of probation, while the defence is proposing a suspended sentence or, at the most, four months’ house arrest.
Williams will be sentenced on Friday.
